There are several approaches that are utilized to improve or treat a property, particularly historic buildings. Preservation is a maintenance focused approach that attempts to keep a property’s existing materials in good condition. Rehabilitation is used when changes are necessary for a property to remain useful but keeps the original character and structure intact. The final two approaches, restoration and reconstruction, are more involved. The goal of restoration is to renovate a property so that it is reflective of a specific time period, while reconstruction involves building or recreating entire properties or portions of properties.
